The Taiwan International Science Fair got underway Jan. 20 in Taipei City, bringing in record numbers of participants to the largest event of its kind in the country, according to the National Taiwan Science Education Center.

During the event’s official opening Jan. 21, Deputy Minister of Education Chang Liao Wan-chien commended Taiwan youths for winning four golds, three silvers and five bronzes in 11 major international science competitions last year. The strong performances reflect the country’s prowess in science education and fundamental research at high schools, he added.

The science fair is part of the government’s ongoing expansion of student exchanges with their counterparts around the world, widening their international perspectives, the deputy minister said. He added that the record number of participants showed that the TISF has become a major platform of its kind in Asia.

According to the organizer, the 23rd edition of the annual event features 233 projects by 658 participants from Taiwan and 28 other countries and territories. Running through Jan. 25, the fair offers workshops for both students and supervisors, science and culture tours and project presentations, as well as cultural events introducing Taiwan’s unique tea heritage and Lunar New Year celebrations.

Winners of this year’s awards will be honored at a ceremony held Jan. 25 at University of Taipei, the organizer said. (SFC-E)
